பங்களாதேஷில் நடைபெற்றுவரும் முத்தரப்புத் தொடரை பாகிஸ்தான் அணி வெற்றியுடன் தொடக்கியுள்ளது. நேற்று நடந்த முதல் போட்டியில் சல்மான் பட் அரைச்சதம் கடக்க, பங்களாதேஷ் அணியை 70 ஓட்டங்கள் வித்தியாசத்தில் பாகிஸ்தான் வீழ்த்தியது.
பங்களாதேஷில் நேற்று ஆரம்பமான முத்தரப்பு ஒருநாள் தொடரில் இந்தியா, பாகிஸ்தான், பங்களாதேஷ் ஆகிய அணிகள் பங்கேற்கின்றன.
நேற்று மிர்பூரில் நடந்த முதலாவது போட்டியில் பாகிஸ்தான், பங்களாதேஷ் அணிகள் மோதின. மழை காரணமாக 40 ஓவர்கள் கொண்ட போட்டியாக நடத்தப்பட்டது. நாணயச் சுழற்சியில் வென்ற பங்களாதேஷ் முதலில் களத்தடுப்பைத் தேர்வு செய்தது.
பாகிஸ்தான் அணிக்கு கம்ரன் அக்மல், சல்மான் பட் ஆகியோர் இணைந்து சிறப்பான தொடக்கத்தைத் தந்தனர். அப்துர் ரசாக் சுழலில் ஒரு சிக்ஸர் அடித்த கம்ரன் அக்மல் 25 ஓட்டங்களுடன் வெளியேறினார். அடுத்து வந்த யுனிஸ்கான்(0) பரிதாபமாக “ரன் அவுட்’ ஆனார். தனது அபார ஆட்டத்தைத் தொடர்ந்த சல்மான் பட் 70 ஓட்டங்களுடன் (10 பவுண்டரிகள்) பவிலியன் திரும்பினார்.
பின்னர் பொறுப்பாக ஆடிய முகமது யூசுப் அரைச்சதம் விளாசினார். “அதிரடி’ அப்ரிடி (20), அலொக் கபாலியின் பந்தில் வீழ்ந்தார். இதே ஓவரில் யூசுப்பையும்(59), வெளியேற்றிய கபாலி திருப்புமுனை ஏற்படுத்தினார். கடைசிக் கட்டத்தில் மிஸ்பாஉல்ஹக் அதிரடியாக விளையாடினார். இவர் 39 ஓட்டங்களுடன் (3 பவுண்டரிகள், 2 சிக்ஸர்கள்) வெளியேறினார். இறுதியில் பாகிஸ்தான் அணி 39.3 ஓவரில் 233 ஓட்டங்களுடன் சகல விக்கெட்டுகளையும் இழந்தது.
கடின இலக்கை விரட்டிய பங்களாதேஷ் அணி திணறல் தொடக்கம் கண்டது. நபீஸ்(9), ரகீபுல் ஹசன்( விரைவாக வெளியேறினர். அடுத்து வந்தவர்கள் அப்ரிடியின் சுழலில் சிக்கினர். மனம் தளராமல் போராடிய அணித்தலைவர் அஷ்ரபுல் அதிகபட்சமாக 56 ஓட்டங்களை எடுத்து ஆட்டமிழக்காமல் இருந்தார். பங்களாதேஷ் அணி 40 ஓவர்களில் 8 விக்கெட்டுகள் இழப்புக்கு 163 ஓட்டங்களை மட்டுமே எடுத்து 70 ஓட்டங்களால் தோல்வியடைந்தது. போட்டியின் சிறப்பாட்டக்காரராக சல்மான் பட் தெரிவானார்.
முத்தரப்புத் தொடரின் இரண்டாவது ஆட்டத்தில் நாளை இந்தியாவும் பாகிஸ்தானும் பலப்பரீட்சை நடத்தவுள்ளன. பகலிரவுப் போட்டியாக இந்தப் போட்டி நடைபெறுகின்றது.

German boss lauds Podolski double

Lukas Podolski’s double ensured Germany made a winning start to their Euro 2008 campaign against Poland in Klagenfurt.

Polish-born Podolski put Germany on the path to a deserved victory when he slid home Miroslav Klose’s pass from close range after 20 minutes.

Germany were dominant, with Poland keeper Artur Boruc saving brilliantly from Germany captain Michael Ballack.

And Podolski added his second with a powerful rising volley that left Boruc helpless with 18 minutes left.

It was Germany’s first victory in the tournament since they beat the Czech Republic to win Euro 96 at Wembley.

And their performance at the Worthersee Stadion, in the first 45 minutes in particular, suggested that Joachim Low’s side are in the mood to make amends for previous disappointments this time around.

Germany wasted a glorious opportunity to go ahead after only four minutes when Klose broke in behind a flat-footed Poland rearguard and ran on to Ballack’s pass.

He had only Boruc to beat, but decided instead to try to find the unmarked Mario Gomez, who was surprised by the pass and slid his effort wide with the goal at his mercy.

But Klose’s unselfishness brought greater reward after 20 minutes when he escaped the attentions of Poland’s defence again and squared for Podolski, who had the simplest of tasks to give Germany a lead they fully merited.

Germany were threatening to take full advantage of Poland’s lack of organisation at the back, but were almost hit by a sucker punch when Wojciech Lobodzinsi played in former Celtic striker Maciej Zurawski, but he pulled his shot wide when well placed.

It was one of the few attacking threats posed by Poland, but normal service was quickly resumed and Germany should have doubled their lead eight minutes before the interval.

Clemens Fritz created the opening on the right flank, but Gomez’s finish was poor and his effort rolled tamely across the face of goal.

Poland, as they had to, showed a greater sense of urgency after the break and were spurred by the arrival of Brazilian-born substitute Roger Guerreiro, who was on for the ineffective Zurawski.

He forced his way into a dangerous position after 58 minutes and it needed a timely intervention from Per Mertesacker to clear his cross.

Germany had gone off the boil in the second half, but substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger brought Boruc into action with a low drive from 25 yards which the Celtic keeper held safely.

And Boruc saved brilliantly from Ballack after 69 minutes, turning over acrobatically from the Germany captain’s rising drive at the end of a long passage of possession.

There was no reprieve for Poland, however, three minutes later when Podolski added his second, helped by a large slice of good fortune.

Klose miscued badly from Schweinsteiger’s pass, but the ball fell invitingly for Podolski, who volleyed high past Boruc to seal the German victory.

Guerrero almost threw Poland a lifeline with seven minutes left, when his excellent cross found Southampton’s Marek Saganowski, but his near post effort was blocked by German keeper Jens Lehmann.

But it was a rare moment of discomfort for Germany, who made a typically efficient and impressive start to Euro 2008.

Pietersen and Sidebottom both had major influences on the match

England secured victory by an innings and nine runs in the final Test to seal a 2-0 series triumph over New Zealand.

They needed barely an hour to capture the remaining five Kiwi wickets, with Ryan Sidebottom taking four of them.

Needing 64 to make England bat again, the tourists added some quick early runs through lusty Jacob Oram strokes.

Oram hit two sixes in 50 from 39 balls, but Sidebottom’s swing was too much for the tail and man-of-the-match James Anderson’s ninth wicket settled it.

New Zealand’s position had the rather despondent air of England’s in the infamous Headingley Test in 1981.

It was actually better, as England were then 135-7 and 92 behind in their follow-on, but they had Ian Botham and added 201 for their final three wickets.

Briefly, it appeared that Oram might play some kind of Botham role.

Broad, with the exuberance of youth, a Test fifty and a vibrant blond mane, worked on the theory that Oram is susceptible to the short-pitched delivery.

The surface was really too benign to cause him problems and Oram swatted him away with relative ease.

But it has been the swinging ball that has done the damage in this match, and the canny Sidebottom knew that, picking up 4-12 from his morning spell.

Debutant Gareth Hopkins got one that both swung and bounced and from then on it was a relative procession.

Skipper Daniel Vettori looked weary from the rigours of another series defeat, no doubt reflecting on the previous Test at Old Trafford, when having been 229 ahead with nine second innings wickets intact, his team were bowled out for 114 and lost by six wickets.

Vettori’s own dogged batting form has dipped dramatically, which is another major factor in the outcome of the three matches.

Having made 173 runs in the first three innings during the winter series, the left-hander has scored just 13 in the last two Tests and here he sliced rather tamely to gully.

Sidebottom kept the ball moving in the corridor of uncertainty to oust Kyle Mills and Iain O’Brien, who tentatively prodded to first and second slip respectively.

Fittingly it was Anderson who applied the gloss, with the wicket of every bowler’s favourite batsman, Chris Martin.

He was swatted for an almighty six over long-on by Oram, who will no doubt be a dangerous customer in the limited overs matches that follow, but produced the ideal delivery for Martin.

The last man epitomised the general New Zealand frailty against an accurate swinging ball, edging to second slip to put England in good heart for the very different proposition that is Friday’s Twenty20 extravaganza.

Meanwhile, England’s series victory moved them up to third in the ICC’s Test rankings, one point above South Africa and just one point behind second-placed India.

Michael Vaughan’s men will move up to second if they beat South Africa later this summer, and India fail to win their forthcoming series in Sri Lanka.

Nadal beats Federer for 4th consecutive French Open title

By the fourth game, Rafael Nadal had Roger Federer kicking the clay in frustration. By the second set, the normally stoic Federer was screaming at himself.

The drubbing went on from there. Nadal won his fourth consecutive French Open title in a rout Sunday, again spoiling Federer’s bid to complete a career Grand Slam.

Dominating the world’s No. 1 player with astounding ease, Nadal swept six consecutive games early in the match and swept the final nine games to win 6-1, 6-3, 6-0.

It was Federer’s worst loss in his 173 Grand Slam matches, and the shortest Roland Garros men’s final in terms of games since 1977.

For the No. 2-ranked Nadal, it was merely another in a series of dominating victories. He lost only 41 games in seven matches.

The Spaniard became the second man to win four consecutive French Open titles. Bjorn Borg did it in 1978-81.

Nadal improved to 28-0 at Roland Garros, where he has won 84 of 91 sets. Only six-time champion Borg won more French Open men’s titles. And Nadal became the first man since Borg in 1980 to win the tournament without dropping a set.

Borg watched the final from the front row. Much of the crowd rooted for Federer, who arrived in Paris for the fourth consecutive year seeking to become the sixth man to win all four major titles. Each time he has lost to Nadal—in the semifinals in 2005, and in the final each of the past three years.

Fans chanted “Ro-ger! Ro-ger!” between games, but Nadal earned their cheers in the end. He won six consecutive games for a 2-0 lead in the second set as a desperate Federer tried everything to reverse the tide.

But when Federer played serve-and-volley on a second serve, Nadal lunged to hit a lob into the corner for a winner. When Federer tried to chip and charge off a return, Nadal passed him with a backhand.

And when Federer settled for playing from the baseline, he had little chance. It’s tough to hit shots where the relentless Nadal can’t reach them, and Federer probably tried too hard, with uncharacteristic errors flying from his racket.

Federer did gain a toehold in the second set when he won consecutive games for the only time for 2-all. But he lost serve at 3-4—hitting a deep volley that Nadal deftly ripped for a winner—and the match quickly slipped away from there.For Federer, the worst came at the end—a 6-0 set loss. The last time that happened to him was on a slightly smaller stage: the first round in 1999 at Queen’s against Byron Black.

On match point, Federer sailed a forehand long, and Nadal raised his arms in triumph. Nadal improved to 9-1 against Federer on clay, with the only loss coming in the 2007 Hamburg final.Other statistics that underscore Nadal’s dominance on the surface: He’s 22-1 in clay-court finals, and 41-0 in best-of-five matches on clay.Federer fell to 12-3 in Grand Slam finals, with all of the losses to Nadal.Federer’s far from alone in his French Open frustration. இதன்மூலம் 50 ஓவர் போட்டியொன்றில் இரட்டைச் சதம் அடிக்கும் முதல் எஸெக்ஸ் பிராந்திய அணி வீரர் என்ற பெருமையை அவர் பெற்றார். கவுண்டிப் போட்டிகளில் 7 வீரர்கள் இந்தச் சாதனையைப் புரிந்துள்ளனர். சர்வதேசப் போட்டிகளில் இதுவரை இந்தச் சாதனை நிலைநாட்டப்படவில்லை. இந்தியாவுக்கு எதிரான பாகிஸ்தான் வீரர் பெற்ற 194 ஓட்டங்களே,  சர்வதேச ஒருநாள் போட்டிகளில் பெறப்பட்ட தனிநபர் அதிகூடிய ஓட்டஎண்ணிக்கையாகும்.
நேற்றுமுன்தினம் நடைபெற்ற லெய்செஸ்ரர்ஸெயார் அணிக்கு எதிரான தொடரின் காலிறுதிப் போட்டியிலேயே எஸெக்ஸ் அணி வீரரான போபரா இந்தச் சாதனையைப் புரிந்துள்ளார்.
முதலில் ஆடிய எஸெக்ஸ் அணி 50 ஓவர்களில் 5 விக்கெட்டுகள் இழப்புக்கு 350 ஓட்டங்களைக் குவித்தது. 4ஆவது வீரராகக் களமிறங்கிய போபரா, தொடக்கத்திலிருந்தே அனல் பறந்த ஆட்டத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்.
அவரது முதல் 100 ஓட்டங்கள் 85 பந்துகளில் பெறப்பட்டன. அடுத்த 100 ஓட்டங்களும் வெறும் 52 பந்துகளில் மட்டுமே பெறப்பட்டது. கடைசி 50 ஓட்டங்களை 16 பந்துகளில் விளாசியிருந்தார். 195 ஓட்டங்களிலிருந்து சிக்ஸர் அடித்து அவர் இரட்டைச் சதத்தைப் பூர்த்தி செய்திருந்தார். இறுதிவரை ஆட்டமிழக்காமலிருந்த போபரா, 138 பந்துகளில் 201 ஓட்டங்களைச் சேர்த்திருந்தார். அவரது ஓட்டஎண்ணிக்கையில் 18 பவுண்டரிகளும் 10 சிக்ஸர்களும் அடங்குகின்றன.
பதிலளித்து ஆடிய லெய்செஸ்ரர்ஸெயார் அணி 41 ஓவர்களில் 232 ஓட்டங்களுக்குள் சகல விக்கெட்டுகளையும் இழந்து 118 ஓட்டங்களால் தோல்வியைத் தழுவியது. 

ஐ.சி.சியின் தரவரிசையில் சந்தர்போல் முன்னேற்றம்

சர்வதேச கிரிக்கெட் சபையின் துடுப்பாட்ட வீரர்களுக்கான தரவரிசைப் பட்டியலில் மேற்கிந்தியத் தீவுகள் அணி வீரர் சந்தர்போல் 5ஆவது இடத்திற்கு முன்னேறியுள்ளார். இதன்மூலம் தனது கிரிக்கெட் வாழ்வில் முதன்முறையாக தரவரிசையில் சிறந்த நிலையை அடைந்துள்ளார் சந்தர்போல்.
சர்வதேச கிரிக்கெட் சபை (ஐ.சி.சி), டெஸ்ட் வீரர்களுக்கான புதிய தரவரிசைப் பட்டியலை நேற்றுமுன்தினம் வெளியிட்டது. இதில் ஆஸ்திரேலிய அணிக்கு எதிரான டெஸ்ட் தொடரில் சிறப்பாகப் பிரகாசித்துவரும் சந்தர்போல், 8ஆவது நிலையிலிருந்து 5ஆவது இடத்திற்கு முன்னேற்றம் கண்டுள்ளார்.
அன்டிகுவாவில் நடைபெற்ற ஆஸி. அணிக்கு எதிரான இரண்டாவது டெஸ்ட் போட்டியின் இரண்டு இன்னிங்ஸிலும் ஆட்டமிழக்காமலிருந்த சந்தர்போல் முறையே 107 மற்றும் 77 ஓட்டங்களைப் பெற்றுக்கொடுத்து ஆட்டநாயகன் விருதை வென்றெடுத்திருந்தார். கிங்ஸ்ரனில் நடைபெற்ற முதல் டெஸ்ட் போட்டியின் முதல் இன்னிங்ஸிலும் அவர் 118 ஓட்டங்களைப் பெற்றுக்கொடுத்திருந்தார். நடைபெற்றுவரும் இந்தத் தொடரில் அவரது தற்போதைய சராசரி 156.50 ஆகும். இவ்வாறு அவர் வெளிப்படுத்தி வரும் திறமைகள், அவரைத் தரவரிசையில் முன்னேற்றம் அடையச் செய்துள்ளன.
கடந்த 12 மாதங்களில் 9 டெஸ்ட் போட்டிகளில் ஆடியுள்ள சந்தர்போல்,106.20 என்ற சராசரிக்கு 1062 ஓட்டங்களைச் சேர்த்துள்ளார். அவற்றில் ஐந்து சதங்களும் அடங்கும்.
நேற்றுமுன்தினம் வெளியிடப்பட்ட புதிய துடுப்பாட்டத் தரவரிசையில் ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் மைக்கல் ஹசே 911 புள்ளிகளுடன் முதலிடத்தில் இருக்கின்றார். பந்துவீச்சாளர் தரவரிசையில் முரளிதரன் தொடர்ந்தும் முதலிடத்தில் நீடிக்கின்றார். மேற்கிந்தியத் தீவுகளுக்கு எதிரான தொடரில் சிறப்பாகப் பிரகாசித்துவரும் பிரட் லீ 4ஆம் இடத்தைப் பிடித்துள்ளார்.
